BREAST ENLARGEMENT WITH LIFT

After having children, breastfeed, and/or fluctuating in weight, many women find that their breasts have lost volume and perkiness. The combination of a breast implant with a breast lift is helpful in restoring fullness of the upper breasts and reducing sagging of the lower breasts.

Dr. Friedman performs about 120 breast enlargements each year. About a quarter of these involve a mastopexy (breast lift). The procedure is performed at Dr. Friedman's private, nationally-accredited surgical center, the West Plano Plastic Surgery Center, conveniently located on the campus of Presbyterian Hospital of Plano. The surgery is performed on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia (so that you are asleep) administered by physician anesthesiologists (not nurses or technicians).

Incisions are made around the areola (the pigmented areas skin surrounding the nipple) and, if necessary, along the lower portion of the breast. Dr. Friedman generally avoids lengthy "anchor" incisions for these procedures. He places saline implants—the only implants currently approved by the FDA—under the pectoralis major muscles and then removes excessive skin from the lower breasts and elevates the nipple areolae. All incisions are closed with internal absorbable sutures. In fact, there are usually no external stitches at all. A tissue glue is used to seal the incisions, and gauze and tape are placed. There is no need for ACE bandages, compression bras, staples, or drainage tubes.

After an hour and a half of recovery, patients are discharged home on pain medicine, antibiotics, and an anti-nausea medicine (if needed). Immediate improvement in breast size is evident, though the implants may take several weeks to settle. Pain is generally well-controlled with narcotic pain medication, which is taken for about a week. Return to light work and driving usually occur at about a week, though strenuous exercise should be avoided for 4 to 6 weeks.
