If you have stubborn fat pockets and excess skin around your midsection, you may be considering a tummy tuck to eliminate these concerns. Traditional tummy tucks typically center on the lower to middle abdomen, but what if your midsection concerns are a little higher?
A reverse tummy tuck reduces excess skin and fat from the upper portion of the abdomen, providing a more targeted technique for slimming the area beneath the breasts.
What Is the Reverse Tummy Tuck Procedure?
You may already be familiar with the tummy tuck or abdominoplasty.
During a traditional tummy tuck, board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Ronald Friedman, will make incisions across the lower abdomen and around the navel to remove stubborn pockets of fat, trim loose skin, and tighten the abdominal wall for a flatter, tighter midsection.
A reverse tummy tuck is similar — the procedure almost mirrors the traditional method; however, with a reverse tummy tuck, the incision is made along the breast crease (inframammary fold) and focuses on the skin in the upper half of the abdomen.
Who is a Candidate for Reverse Tummy Tuck?
Reverse tummy tucks are not a substitute for traditional tummy tucks. In fact, they are generally performed in patients who have already had a mini or full tummy tuck procedure but now notice (due to aging or weight loss) that the upper abdominal skin is loose.
You may be a candidate for reverse tummy tuck if you have:
- Loose skin that is isolated to the upper abdomen. If you have loose skin involving the lower abdomen or the entire abdomen, then a traditional tummy tuck is more appropriate.
- Existing scars in the folds beneath the breasts (due to prior breast lift or breast reduction).Since the reverse tummy tuck uses incisions in the inframammary creases (the folds beneath the breasts, having existing scars in these areas may make the decision to undergo reverse tummy tuck easier.
- Good cleavage. The reverse tummy tuck scar will cross the midline, so more cleavage equals better camouflage.
As with any other cosmetic surgery, Candidates for a reverse tummy tuck should be in good health, not smoke or be willing to quit, and have realistic expectations for their results.
